Nature Activities for Kids, Summer 2021

We’ve come across some great nature activities for kids in Saskatchewan to enjoy this summer. You will find more possibilities in Nature and Environmental Programming for Children and Youth. 

Notice Nature 

EcoFriendlySask partnered with the North Saskatchewan River Basin Council on the Notice Nature project. If you’re in their area, you can win prizes, but even if you’re not, the bingo cards offer a wide variety of different outdoor activities and can be downloaded from the Notice Nature website. 

Woodland Art Adventures 

Prepare for adventure by borrowing a nature backpack from Woodland Art Adventures. The backpacks include indoor and outdoor activities, craft supplies, several scavenger hunts, and the materials to make a nature clipboard. There are backpacks on animal tracks, birding, botany, navigating by nature, and pond exploration. 

Themed art kits are also available covering topics such as snowflakes and exploring the night sky. 

Outdoor Science Kit

The Saskatchewan Science Centre is offering a kit packed with fun experiments and activities for kids to discover science in the outdoors. Kids will get to explore leaves, campfires, bugs, animal poop, tornadoes, microorganisms, sunshine, and stars. The kit is portable and all the instructions are included. 

Summer Camps - Regina 

Join the Wascana Junior Explorers on Saturday mornings from 9:00-10:30 am for fun nature programming. There will be different activities each week. 

The Saskatchewan Science Centre is offering week-long, science-themed day camps in August. Kids will build bridges, learn how to make soap, go on a virtual star tour, and much, much more. 

Summer Camps - Saskatoon 

Meewasin Valley Authority is offering eco adventure camps at Beaver Creek Conservation Area on Wednesdays and Thursdays throughout July and August. Topics include rodents, birds, aquatic invertebrates, and nature navigation.

Wild Roots: A Summer Camp for Girls, July 30-Aug 3 (Saskatoon) 
SaskOutdoors and Wildernook Fresh Air Learning are offering a camp for 9-11 year-old girls who would like to spend more time outdoors from July 30 to Aug. 3.

Greater Short Horned Lizard Monitoring, August (Grasslands National Park) 
Volunteers are invited to look for Greater Short Horned Lizards and identify areas of invasive plants at Grasslands National Park in August.

Connecting Kids with Nature, Aug. 14-16 (North Battleford) 
Learn to adapt the school curriculum to outdoor learning at a 2-day camp with SaskOutdoors, Aug. 14-16.

Jane’s Walk, May 4-6 (Regina, Saskatoon)
Take a look at the Jane’s Walks being offered in Saskatoon and Regina May 4-6. In Saskatoon, you can visit trees in Buena Vista, share your experiences as a pedestrian with the City, or join a walk at the Northeast Swale. Nature Conservancy of Canada is leading a nature walk in Regina’s Wascana Marsh.

Work together to repair household items and bicycles at Repair Café Prince Albert from 1-4 pm, May 5.

Spiders & the Prairie Gardener, May 5 (Saskatoon)

Great Canadian Birdathon, May 12 (Regina)
Nature Saskatchewan will be hosting the Great Canadian Birdathon on May 12 starting with early morning birding around Wascana Lake followed by an afternoon birding at Last Mountain Lake.

Sprucin’ Up Meeting Lake, May 12 (Meeting Lake)
Join Nature Conservancy of Canada in planting spruce, birch, and dogwood at Meeting Lake 3 from 9 am-3 pm, May 12.

Ecological Literacy, May 12 (Saskatoon)
Lichen Nature will be offering monthly ecological literacy sessions for the remainder of 2018. The first session is from 12:30-4:30 pm, May 12.

Camp Wild Roots, July 8-14 & Aug. 26-31
Camp Wild Roots is offering two summer camps for kids to learn about growing and foraging food, permaculture, and wilderness skills. The July 8-14 camp is in Dunblane. The Aug. 26-31 camp is at Aloha Farm east of Regina and will be followed by a 3-day food and music festival.

Science Centre Day Camp, Aug. 21-24 (Prince Albert)
The Saskatchewan Science Centre is hosting a day camp in Prince Albert for 8-13 year olds from Aug. 21-24.
